Petit Valençay

Petit Valençay

This attractive French goats' cheese is named after the town of Valençay. Its rind has a rustic blue-grey colour which is made of the natural moulds. The rind is then darkened by ash coated charcoal powder. Valençay cheese used to have a shape of a perfect pyramid with a pointed top. However, it is rumoured that Napoleon is responsible for it’s pyramid shape:- after a disastrous expedition to Egypt, he returned back to France, and in a fit of rage, he took out his sword and sliced the top off the cheese. From that day on, the cheese has always been made with a flat top!
